Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in London on April 16, 1889. He first climbed on stage at the age of 5 and performed in theatre until 1913. The following year, he signed his first contract in America with the Keystone Co. and participated in 35 short films that year. On February 28, 1914, the famous vagabond The Tramp appeared on screen for the very first time. During his long and prolific career, Chaplin made 80 films and won 3 Oscars. He received the first in 1929 in several categories for his film The Circus. In 1972, 20 years after being blacklisted, he returned to Hollywood to receive an Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. Undeniably, Chaplin was a genius creator who marked the 20th century, when film was recognized as the seventh art. In 1952, he was awarded for his talent and versatility once again, winning the Oscar for Best Original Score for his film Limelight. Chaplin spent much of his life with Oona O’Neil, whom he married in 1943 and had 8 children. In December 1977, Chaplin’s health deteriorated rapidly and he passed away at his home, Manoir de Ban in Switzerland, on Christmas Eve. He was buried in the Corsier-sur-Vevey cemetery on December 27.
